William E.'s Story
After leaving Ferris HS, I moved to San Francisco, then Los Angeles, New York, finally ended up in Montreal where I finished high school at Baron Byng. Upon returning to the U.S. I went to Fort Wright College, then California College of Arts and Crafts, back to Fort Wright, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1975. Moved to Olympia, where I taught painting workshops at Evergreen State College, returned to Spokane briefly before moving to New York in 1978, then Boston where I continued to study painting.
I've been painting professionally since 1978, exhibiting in New York, Boston, Seattle, Portland OR, and other places. I've lectured at Marymount Manhattan College in New York, Whitworth College, Fort Wright College and Eastern Washington University in the Spokane Area, and at the University of Washington and the Gage Academy in Seattle. My work is represented by Davidson Galleries/Davidson Contemporary in Seattle and Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland, OR. I have paintings in many public, corporate and private collections, including the State of Washington, City of Portland, City of Seattle, Chicago Title, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Swedish Hospital, University Hospital, McGraw-Hill Publishers in New York, William and Melinda Gates, as well as works in collections in the U.S. and Europe.
I currently live outside of Snohomish, WA, on Panther Lake, where I continue to paint and teach privately. I am a student of Seido Juku Karate, and study under Jun Shihan Tom Tanaka. I have second degree black belt ranking in Seido Karate, and regularly attend tournaments in New York and in Tokyo. Seido Juku is a traditional Japanese style founded in New York by Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura. I have attended classes and workshops at Seido Honbu in New York on a...Expand for more
regular basis, and have taken many classes under Kaicho himself. I am the Seattle Seido Karate branch webmaster; you can google Seattle Seido Karate for a site link. I also am assistant instructor for adult Seido Karate classes at the Northshore YMCA in Bothell, and senior instructor for kids classes at at Northshore as well.
I like movies of all kinds, especially Japanese movies, and listen to many different kinds of music, from classical to jazz to pop to rap. I am studying Japanese, and get help from several of my painting students who are from Japan. Watashi wa nihongo ga skoshi shika hanasimasen.
I am currently working on paintings of landscapes around the Snohomish area. I also have works in progress based on a visit to Tokyo and Shinfuji, Japan. I am writing, for personal reasons, an extended autobiography. I'm currently reading "The Assault on Reason" by Al Gore, and "The Sound of the Mountain" by Kawabata Yasunari. I am politically liberal and progressive, like our founding fathers. I do website design on the side, and a variety of other computer related design and support activities, including database design, network design, training and troubleshooting.
My current art interests are Shin Hanga prints, especially Hasui, Kasamatsu and Yoshida; current music interests are Blonde Redhead, The Mendoza Line, Hotel Lights, Lloyd Cole, David S. Ware, Durutti Column, Amy Winehouse, Booker Ervin and Guitar Wolf. My computer is always a Mac, now a 2Ghz dual processor G5, a G4 Powerbook and a 15 in. MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo.
I am currently single. I maintain a website devoted to my painting, and two painting related blogs: painter's workshop and realism blog. These can all be accessed by googleing my full name William E. Elston.
